This self-portrait was created using Adobe Illustrator, which required a painstaking, step-by-step procedure to convert an image into a digital artwork based on vectors. The objective was to create a contemporary, stylised impression by playing with geometric forms, colour schemes, and layering methods.
In this piece, I employed flat, geometric shapes and clean lines to construct the portrait, reflecting my preference for simplicity and clarity in design. The deliberate use of bold colors, such as the vibrant pinks and deep purples, conveys a sense of confidence while maintaining visual harmony. These choices illustrate my understanding for color theory and how to use it effectively to evoke mood and emotion.
I started by using a photo of myself as a reference layer in Adobe Illustrator. To act as a guide without affecting the drawing process, the layer’s opacity was decreased and it was locked.
I sketched my face’s features, hair, and accessories with the Pen Tool, paying particular attention to its distinct characteristics and shapes so that you can maintain precise proportions while permitting creative interpretation. I deconstructed intricate designs into straightforward geometric shapes.
I used a custom palette to match the skin tones, shadows, and highlights. i applied a flat design style, layering various shades to create depth and dimensions
The image gained dimension from the precisely drawn lips, eyelashes, and eyebrows. In order to add individuality and balance the composition, the headphones and earrings were styled. I tweaked the curves for more seamless layer transitions and changed anchor points to provide an appearance of professionalism.
The process of creating this illustration allowed me to explore the fundamentals of vector art, including layering and precision. Each element was carefully crafted and positioned to form a cohesive composition, showcasing my attention to detail and ability to work systematically. This technical proficiency is a key part of my design journey, as I aim to become proficient in industry-standard tools and techniques.
